Conceptual Costume Design, 2020
opera by Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf
director: Mathilde Lopez
Based on the work of a 12th Century troubadour, the opera follows Jaufré as his obssesion and passion for a woman he has never met eventually leads to his death. My concept focuses on the themes of idealisation, obsession and control of women, and the paralysation and entrapment this causes, drawing from the medieval portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the objectification of women today.
The music blends elements of the modern and medieval. Leaning into this in the design creates a saturated, surreal portrayal of our endless cycle into apocalypse and entrapment in the skewed human perception of reality.
