Conceptual costume design, 2020
This project explores Philip Pullman's Grimm Tales, adapted for stage by Philip Wilson. Realising the origins of the stories were not clear, I focused in on the oral tradition of fairy tales and the relationships between the characters. The ensemble cast became like a family in a domestic setting, with clothes patched together from the past. This would also help to create a production with minimal waste, as everything sourced would have had a previous life.
Paula Rego's work was an important influence, as her work amalgamates folk tales, magic and domestic life, as well as secrets, pain and fear. Rego's drawing style and methods also influenced the costume drawings, and drawing was an important part of the process.
